Refuge

Safe Families for Children storyOne Tuesday we got a referral for a family needing immediate next day support. A mum was moving from a refuge centre to her own home in another city. The older children were at school while she was moving but her younger children weren’t allowed to be with her during the move due to safeguarding concerns associated with her ex-partner. So Mum needed someone who could care for the two younger children during the day while she was moving house.

After posting the need out and discussing the situation with various interested volunteers we eventually hit on one of our faithful volunteers who had availability to help. That evening our Family Support Manager took the volunteer to meet the family and volunteer, where she was an instant hit with the kids, having brought toy with her which the children were instantly fascinated by. Mum was very happy with the arrangement and has now asked if we can extend our support to her with befriending.

So many families are just amazed to find out that there are people out there willing to help a complete stranger. And to have that support during a difficult time gives them the hope they need to continue.
